Red Leaf |

In this quilt I wanted to catch the vibrancy
of the first red leaf which appear on the Sea grape trees in the spring.
The quilt has a whole cloth silk top on which I hand painted the background with silk paints. The branches of the tree and the leaves are appliquéd and machine quilted and embroidered. I wanted to create a faded sun bleached effect around the outer edge of the quilt so I created the leaves and branches with threadwork. Displayed at the Stepping Stones Nassau Quilt show 2008, and featured in a television show called Native Stew which covered the quilt show. Displayed at the Ladder Gallery and included as part of the 2008 Transforming Spaces art exhibition. |

This quilt was inspired by a visit to Kwazulu
Natal in South Africa where the life pictured in quilt still exists. It has a whole cloth cotton quilt top and I used a stencil I made to create the chevron border pattern which is interspersed with hand dyed fabric appliquéd onto the quilt top. The people, grass, trees and houses were machine appliquéd. I created the other effects such as the contours using machine quilting and embroidery. Displayed at the Stepping Stones Nassau Quilt show 2008, and featured in a television show called Native Stew which covered the quilt show. Displayed at the Abolition of Slavery Exhibition at the PopOp studio in Nassau in 2008. (Back to top) |

The inspiration for this piece was a photo I had taken of some sea grape trees on Orange Hill Beach west of Nassau. The picture was created by placing small pieces of fabric under tulle and I free motion quilted them in place. Free motion thread work creates the details on the leaves. The fabrics I used were cottons, satins, suiting, polyester and tulle. 2nd Place Small Quilt section, Nassau Quilt show 2007. Finalist in the 2007 Houston International Quilt Festival, "Quilts: A World of Beauty" Now part of the private collection of Mr. & Mrs. Henry of Canada. (Back to top) |

I used scraps of fabric to create this image. I placed tulle on top of the scraps and used free motion quilting to keep everything in place. The sea oats (the grass in the foreground) were made using embroidered yarn. Given as a gift to Mrs. Robin Symonette of Nassau Bahamas (2006). (Back to top) |

The borders were pieced using many African style fabrics. I appliquéd the dancer to the background fabrics and then embellished the piece using beads and threads. Finally I free motion quilted the piece. Inspired by a quilt made by L. Barnett, 1999. Awarded 1st prize, Small Quilts category, Nassau Quilt Show 2005 Now part of the private collection of Jean Bell of Vancouver, Canada. (Back to top) |

I used the fusible web appliqué method, and then used free motion threadwork to add details to the palm tree, leaves and trunk. To add texture I added hand made cording to the sea, beads to the sand and then it was free motion quilted. The fabrics used were cottons, satins, sheers, tulle and polyester lining. Awarded 2nd prize, Small Quilts Category , Nassau Quilt Show 2004. Not for sale. (Back to top)
